Hazardous substances compliance advice

Inspections often turn on a few fixable things. We help you find them before the certifier's visit and sort them out after one, and we help plan new sites so they meet the regulations from the start.

Before the visit

Pre-inspection check

We walk the site and your records against the requirements and give you a short written list of anything that would hold up certification, so you can deal with it before the visit. To start on your own, download our pre-inspection checklist.

After an inspection

Getting back to compliant

If a site or tank has failed, we work through the certifier's findings with you, agree the fixes and the order to do them in, and book the follow-up inspection.

New or changed sites

Planning a location

Opening a site, adding a tank or storing more product? We advise on layout and quantities early, and on the notice WorkSafe needs before a new location is commissioned.

What usually decides an inspection

  • An inventory of hazardous substances that doesn't match what is on site
  • Separation distances to buildings, boundaries and ignition sources
  • Secondary containment that is missing, too small or full of rainwater
  • Signage, safety data sheets and labelling
  • An emergency response plan that is missing, out of date or untested
  • The right type and number of fire extinguishers

Each of these is easier and cheaper to fix with a few weeks' notice than on the day a certificate is due.
