Hazardous substances certification for sites that store fuel and gas
HSWNZ inspects and certifies hazardous substance locations and stationary tanks for New Zealand businesses, from service stations and cafés to chicken farms and paint and panel shops. We tell you what passes and what needs fixing, and we remind you before your certificate is due.

Most of our work is certifying sites and tanks against the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017. We also help you get ready for that visit, and offer wider health and safety support.

Your certifier checks the location or tank against the regulations and the relevant standards, on site and in your records.
Certificate or a written fix list
If the site meets the requirements, we issue the certificate and record it on WorkSafe's register. If not, you get a written list of what needs to change.
We remind you
Certificates expire. We contact you ahead of the due date and book the next visit, so your site doesn't lapse.
How much you store decides whether you need a certificate
A location compliance certificate is needed when you store or use explosive, flammable, oxidising, toxic or corrosive substances above the thresholds in the regulations. WorkSafe's calculator works it out from what you store and how much.
